Make a Change in 2017: Do Pest Control the Right Way

2017 clock

Do-it-yourself pest control has come a long way, and there are a lot of things that you can do to get rid of the pests in your home or business property. Insect or rodent traps can be put down, corners can be sprayed, and for the most part, if you have a few bugs or you see a mouse, you can take care of the problem. But generally if you see one mouse, there are others, and if there are bugs crawling around, they have to be getting in somewhere—or worse, breeding in your home. And for the safety of your family, your kids, or even if you own a business, make the change in 2017 and do pest control the right way. Here’s how…

Pest Control Starts with You

The first thing that must be done is to make sure your residence or building is not pest-friendly. You can spray, trap, and spray some more, but if your place always has what pests need to live, you’ll never get rid of them, no matter what you do.

Food left out, crumbs on the floor, dripping water from faucets, and even old dishwater are giving pests exactly what they need to survive. Even caked-on grease on the stove is a food supply, or dirty pots and pans. Pests don’t need much to eat, and those very things are a calling card for them—and once they find a free food and water supply, they will be back.

Cleaning Up

The next thing that needs to be done is to clean up. Dribbles of milk, soda, and even water that gets on the floor must be wiped up immediately. Just by doing that, you are taking away a source of nourishment for pests—and remember, if they don’t have something to drink, they won’t want to be coming back.

It goes the same way with food. Any spills of sauce, gravy, grease, fats, or anything that hits the floor or the countertop must be cleaned up as soon as possible.

Appliances also need to be kept as clean as possible. Baked-on spills, crumbs on surfaces, food left out—all of this must be cleaned as thoroughly as possible. Pots and pans with food remains in them are the same way—either save what’s left in a sealed container or throw it out and then wash and dry the pots and pans.

Cleaning and making your home undesirable for pests to live in is the first step towards doing pest control the right way.

How Are Pests Getting In?

Another thing to do is to find out how the pests are getting into your house. Sure, if you have open windows or damaged screens, they will easily fly or crawl in. Termites leave entry tubes on the side of the building for access.

Rodents, however, are generally a bit sneakier than just coming in through a window. They like to find cracks in the foundation, openings where pipes or electrical cables come in, even holes in the eves of the building are entry ways for these types of pests.

Patching these entries with caulk is one of the best ways to stop pests, but termites are a different problem and need to be handled professionally.
